Engagement Ring Shapes: How to Pick the Right One for Her

Round, oval, cushion, emerald, radiant or marquise. What each shape looks like on the hand, what it costs you, and how to tell which one she'll love.

The short answer: shape is the first decision and the most personal one. It sets the whole look of the ring. It doesn't change the quality of the diamond, but it does change how big it looks, how much it sparkles and what it costs. If you only get one thing right, get the shape she wants.

Every OLVR ring style can be built with six shapes: round, oval, cushion, emerald, radiant and marquise. Here's how they compare.

The six shapes

Round

The classic. A round brilliant is cut to throw back as much light as possible, so it's the sparkliest shape there is. It's also the most popular, which means it tends to cost the most per carat. Good for: someone who wants timeless and can't go wrong.

Oval

A round's sparkle stretched into a longer shape. Ovals look bigger than a round of the same weight and make fingers look longer and slimmer. Good for: someone who wants classic with a little more presence for the budget.

Cushion

A square or slightly rectangular stone with soft, rounded corners. It has a romantic, slightly vintage feel and big, bold flashes of light. Good for: someone who likes the softness of a round but wants something a little different.

Emerald

A rectangle with long, flat facets that create a "hall of mirrors" look instead of sparkle. It's elegant and architectural. Because the facets are open, emeralds show more of what's inside the stone, so clarity matters a bit more here. Good for: someone with a clean, modern or art deco taste.

Radiant

The outline of an emerald with the sparkle of a round. Radiants have trimmed corners and lots of small facets, so they're bright and lively. Good for: someone who loves a rectangle shape but still wants maximum sparkle.

Marquise

Long and pointed at both ends. Marquise has the biggest look of any shape for its weight and makes a real statement. Good for: someone bold who wants something you don't see every day.

Quick comparison

Shape Looks
Round Most sparkle, classic
Oval Larger for its weight, elongating
Cushion Soft, romantic, vintage feel
Emerald Sleek, mirror-like, modern
Radiant Rectangle with big sparkle
Marquise Largest look, statement

Size: why shape changes how big it looks

Carat is weight, not size. Elongated shapes (oval, marquise, and longer cushions and radiants) spread that weight over a bigger surface, so they look larger from above than a round of the same carat. If looking big for the budget matters, an oval or marquise stretches it furthest.

How to find out which shape she wants

  1. Look at what she already wears. Round, soft shapes or clean, angular ones? Her current jewellery is a good clue.
  2. Check her saves. Pinterest boards and saved Instagram posts are where most people keep the rings they like.
  3. Ask someone close to her. A sister or best friend often knows exactly.
  4. Just let her pick. Our free Ring Report lets her choose her shape, setting and details, and sends her answers straight to you. More ideas in how to find out what ring she wants.

Want a shape we don't list, like pear, princess or asscher? We make those as bespoke rings. Once you know the shape, our Diamond Guide covers how to pick the stone itself.
